Heart Health? Let a Dietitian In Your Kitchen

February is Heart Health Month… I had the pleasure of presenting a heart healthy version of chicken wings to a company through the American Heart Association. Here’s a video of the recipe.

TIPs for Heart Health

We used boneless skinless chicken breasts cut into strips instead of chicken wings and drumettes which contain more saturated fat.

Skin contains a high amount of the saturated fat, by eliminating the skin you do improve the unhealthy fat to healthy fat of chicken.

If you are not used to no salt in your cooking, it is best to try reducing your sodium preference gradually.

You are more likely to add too much at the table, it’s best to add 1/2 tsp of salt in your recipe. When cooking with salt it can help highlight the other flavors in your recipe.

If a recipe calls for 1 tsp or more of salt, try cutting back to 1/2 tsp. 1 tsp of salt contains 2300 mg of sodium! That’s your daily allowance for healthy individuals. If you have heart disease, the recommendation is less than 1500 mg of sodium per day.

Here are other sources of sodium in the diet:
