July 13 has been declared Embrace Your Geekness Day and we’re going to celebrate DIYK style, with some geeky words of food wisdom from the colleagues, friends, and family of BATMAN (née Dietitian Julie).

- As a chemist, I’m fascinated by the chemistry of aroma and flavor. Flavonoids (flavor-producing compounds) have a lot of variation, but different compounds (from some very disparate sources) can produce very similar flavors. Likewise, some smells we’d easily differentiate have very similar chemical structures. Just moving one little carbon atom can make a big difference. Click HERE and HERE to read more about flavonoids.
- I love food because it is one of very few purely visceral pleasures a person can share with others; next to sex, there’s nothing stronger for building bonds than breaking bread together
- Pickled ferments!!!!! Delicious and nutritious and so far my favorite way to traditionally preserve food.

- I love to cook! My favorite recipes are simple and flavorful. Most the time, it’s whatever I think of and nothing is written down. But my all time favorite simple and flavorful recipe is homemade marinara/pasta sauce. It’s not mine. It’s from Skinny Taste. It’s soooo simple and quick, and you can add anything to it. Bon Appetit!
